Song Birds, V, Comparing and Ordering Numbers

9:30  Gathering – Tues - look at bird books, Thurs - make a pattern with birds and nests

9:40  Circle Time
-song - Little Bird
The kids LOVED this song, and it was so simple. We did actions to go along with it. The kids start the song standing up, and by the end they are sitting down, so it works out great as a transition song.
Tune: Twinkle, Twinkle
Little bird, little bird, fly around, up to the sky down to the ground.
Little bird, little bird, flap your wings. Open your beak and sweetly sing.
Little bird, little bird, fly to your nest. Now it’s time to take a rest.

-Read Aloud –
Tues: The Magic School Bus Leaves the Nest
Thurs: The Best Nest

9:50  Literacy Activity – Tuesday:V Vacation from SEEL (alliteration in Pre-K section)
Thursday: Velcro V from SEEL (letter naming in Pre-K)
10:05  Math –
Tuesday: Compare and order with unifix cubes. As a group compare which group of cubes has more and less, then put cube towers in order from least to greatest. Give children a chance to do it on their own.

Thursday: Roll dice to determine how many cubes you should put in your tower. Make 3 towers, then order them from least to greatest. Show the teacher what you did, then see if you can do 3 more.

10:20  Break/Snack –
Tuesday: crackers

10:40  Science/Social Studies –
Tuesday: Watch Youtube video Robin Nest From Eggs to Flight! What do song birds make their nests out of? How do mama birds take care of their eggs? How do they feed the new baby birds? Role play.

Thurday: Make pinecone bird feeders. Have kids spread peanut butter on a pine cone, then roll it in bird seed.
P.s. Love the idea of collecting parts of a bird’s nest in a bottle, but there is no nature around our house right now. :)

11:05  Choosing Time
1.  Make a bird nest (art). Use shredded brown construction paper to glue nest, draw eggs or baby birds with markers, use feathers and plain bird cut out for birds.

 2. Sensory/Role Play with nest materials (see Teach Preschool style, birdseed playdough, or chicks and seeds sensory play) - We ended up playing with little wooden birds and birdhouses I happened to have in the birdseed. This activity was extremely popular with the kids.
3. Continue bird role play. The kids couldn’t get enough of this, I couldn’t believe it. It was flying around to get food for the babies and feeding the tweeting babies for 20 minutes straight.
4. I had the math activity out, but I don’t think kids did it very much because they were so interested in the other things. I probably put the literacy extension out there, too. I shouldn’t have waited so long to post what we did, because I don’t remember anything now that wasn’t on the lesson plan. The popular stuff is on here, though!
11:25  Clean up, Gather to sing and read until picked up

Here are the baby birds getting fed in their really big red nest.
