Great Salt Lake Prep

The kids are so excited to go on our field trip to the Great Salt Lake on Thursday! We did some things to get ready . . . Today I was reminded just how awesome the SEEL site is - the activity was simple, the kids really loved it, and it's just the thing kids should be doing for literacy!

9:30 – Gathering - Duplos

9:40 – Welcome Time

-song - Welcome Song (Hello, neighbor, what do you say? It’s going to be a beautiful day. So clap your hands and stomp your feet, jump up and down and take a seat.)

-Read Aloud – I've Got Music by Cathy Molitoris - This book has a lot of tap and clap, perfect for our literacy topic!

9:50 – Literacy Activity – Rhyme Time ap

They had fun thinking of new voices - they did "duck" talk, then wanted to do fox. I said, "I don't even know what the fox says. Then of course they had to tell me, hahaha!

10:05 – Math – Data - answer question with name magnets - who has seen the great salt lake? Who has touched the great salt lake? Who is excited to go to the great salt lake? (Looks at graphs, count, and observe)

-outside, find 2 rocks that are the same, talk about attributes while justifying sameness

10:20 – Break/Snack – sand box is outside - what can they discover?

10:40 – Science/Social Studies –

Prepare for field trip - What will we find there? Revisit rocks and soil lessons . . . What do you know and what do you wonder? (Make a chart to bring to the lake)

• Show brine shrimp pictures
• Let the kids taste water, then salt water. They look the same but they taste different. Why? Explain that there is salt in the salt water and you can’t see it because it dissolved. Pour salt in a clear water bottle. Add water. Get out the microscope and let the kids look at the salt at the bottom of the bottle. Then put on the lid and let the kids take turns shaking it. Ask where the salt went? Talk about how the Great Salt Lake is filled with salt, but you can’t see it because it is dissolved. We clapped to the word dissolved so we could remember.

11:05 – Choosing Time –

• Rocks and shells in water table
• Water color paintings with salt - watch it react when it’s sprinkled, observe what happens when it dries
• Cutting and gluing groups of 1 and 2 (paper is divided in half - 1 written on left, 2 written on right). Kids find things in magazines that are in groups of 1 or 2

Kyle had it all to himslef until the other kids finished painting - then they were all over it.
