Fairy Tales

Fairy Tales for science? What in the world? The science time is actually for science or social studies, and occasionally, other stuff we never fit in. We wanted the kids to have a chance to work with fairy tales and also drama, so this was the best place to put it. The plan is to read/do activities with a couple of fairy tales this week, and next week at the Christmas party put on a puppet show or play (short one) for the other group. Julie Michaelis said she has fairy tale puppets, but dressing up is great, too.

So, in week one, read some stories, do some activities, and have them choose a fairy tale. On week 2, day 1, plan your little play. Week 2, day 2 is the Christmas party, and we'll perform it there. A note on performing is to practice the way you're going to perform. For the shadow play we practiced holding up our puppets behind my couch, and they did awesome, but had a hard time with the actual shadows. It was still fun for them, but in the future I'll do the practice just like the performance.

As for the activities, I googled fairy tale lesson plans and fairy tale activities, and got a lot of hits. You can also google the same things with specific fairy tales once you know which ones you are going to read. If you need ideas on how to condense a fairy tale short enough for preschoolers to act out, I'm totally willing to help.

So, summary: Week one - do some fun fairy tale stuff and choose the fairy tale. Week 2, plan and carry out little play.
