I basically did the same thing with butterflies as last time, with a few modifications, but since I created math lessons to go along with the butterfly theme, and added a dramatic play element, I thought it was worth posting. It was SO great to have stuff already posted from two years ago, so there are two lessons: 1. Look and see if someone has posted what you are needing to teach, it could help, and 2. If you have posted, someone will be happy!

Write the letter U on paper airplanes, put U words on them and send them up, up, and away
10:05 Math – Put in order from least to greatest, then greatest to least the amount of food eaten
each day by the Very Hungry Caterpillar, use Very Hungry Caterpillar printables (I found the fruit by Googling "Very Hungry Caterpillar caterpillar printables." Here are some printables, but not the ones I used http://www.1plus1plus1equals1.net/2009/03/very-hungry-caterpillar-tot-pack/)
10:20 Break/Snack – apples, dance inside w scarves, instruments if rainy

10:40 Science – Butterflies
- Show kids the caterpillars, talk about what happened
- Introduce metamorphosis with “Caterpillar to Butterfly”
- Practice saying word, clap syllables
- Show phases on computer or in magazine
- Use metamorphosis puppets, also act out the phases:
1. Egg: Have children round their body like the shape of an egg.
2. Larva: Crawl and eat like a caterpillar.
3. Pupa: Crawl into a sleeping bag with colorful scarves inside.
4. Butterfly: Children pop out of the bag swaying their colorful scarves behind them.

Kids take turns picking a picture card, then determine if it belongs under the umbrella (u
words). Kids get to stand under the umbrella and make short u sounds while attaching their
word
10:05 Math – Tell children we are going to feed the hungry caterpillar his fruits. Use unifix
cubes to represent fruits (unless you have cute little miniature fruit manipulatives). After all of
the fruits are counted out, talk about combining fruits for caterpillar meals. Example: Noah, if
the very hungry caterpillar ate all of the strawberries (give him the strawberries) and all of the
plums (give him the plums), how many fruits would he eat for his meal? This was simple, yet a
surprising hit with the kids. They did it for quite a while in choosing time. Oh, and they thought
it was funny to pretend to eat the meal once they got the number correct.

- larva – pipe cleaners twisted on leaf

note: I did this two years ago with tacky glue. It worked great, but I had to do all of the gluing.
This time I tried it with white school glue. It just worked okay, but the plus was kids could do it themselves.
Maybe next time I would have the kids do it with white glue, then have tacky on hand to fix
falling parts.
