Five Senses, Letters in Names, Counting to 15

9:30  Gathering –

Decorate name paper – 15 small stickers and crayons

9:40  Welcome Time

            -song – Slippery Fish (with feathers, discuss sense of touch)

            -Who is here today

            -calendar

            -Read Aloud – I’ve Got Music (discuss sense of hearing)

9:50  Literacy Activity –

Stretch out names with slinky – last

Give kids name puzzle, when they complete first name, give them last name puzzle. (Keep in snack bags so they can take them home to practice.)

While kids are doing puzzle, sing “Name Game”

10:05  Math –

Count to 15 using bodies. Start by counting number of kids. While counting, give each child a number. We don’t have 15, so ask kids what we can count that we will have 15. Noses? Chins? Count things until they realize they can count hands, feet, ears, etc.

If time, introduce big counting book.

10:20  Break/Snack –

Pretzels, play outside

Now let’s play a little game, how many senses can you name?

Seee, hear, smell, taste, touch (x3), I use them every day.

Mr. Potato Head’s Senses – Large Mr. Potato Head on the door, eyes, ears, nose, tongue, and hands to the side. Tell the kids, “Oh, no, Mr. Potato head can’t see, what can we do to help him?” When they say eyes, have one of the children put on the eyes, then do fast activity to show what the eyes do. Repeat with all five senses.

Activities:

Eyes: Practice using magnifying glasses (examine hands, clothes, carpet)

Ears: Listen to sounds and try to name what they are (dogs, boats, trains, etc., from cd)

Nose: See if kids can identify objects by smell only (lemon, mint, tomato)

Tongue: See if kids can identify food by taste only (goldfish)

Hands: Put various objects in a bag, see if kids can figure out what they are just by touch

11:05  Choosing Time

1.      Art-(smooth, rough, smell) – paint design with glue brush, sprinkle colored, scented salt

2.      Literacy – paint over name (used this feature, laminated)

3.      Sensory/Math – Cloud dough (flour and baby oil) – put 15 gem stones in it, challenge kids to find all 15. Provide spoons and small dishes for sensory play

4.      Science – Experiment with what different materials sound like when shaking in a cup (rice, beans, flax, wheat, batting). Provide magnifying glasses to look closely at materials.
