9:50 Literacy Activity – May There Always Be Me books. Sing “May There Always Be Sunshine,” practice a few times. Then have kids dictate and draw one thing they want there to always be to finish off their books. Also have them draw a picture of their mom and dad.
10:05 Math – Estimation Jars - use unifix cubes, introduce estimation
For estimation jars, place objects in a jar and tell the children to look at the jar and decide what number of cubes are probably in it. Write answers down. First look at answers and decide which ones would be unreasonable. For example, someone says 93 when there are 12, or 3 when there are clearly many more. After eliminating outliers, count the objects and talk about which estimates were close.
10:20 Break/Snack – graham crackers, play outside
Transition - May There Always Be Sunshine
10:40 Science –
Investigate the power of air by blowing objects across the floor. Guess how many blows each object will require to go 2 feet. Record guesses and actual on whiteboard. Have children justify guesses (talk about estimates again).
11:05 Choosing Time
1. make a wind-sock - glue crepe paper on construction paper circles (didn’t get to this one this time, but it’s a good future activity - easier than kite-making)
2. paint - blow the paint with straws on a kite picture (this was great for some kids, hard for others, but a great challenge for all!)
3. dramatic play - puppets
4. investigate further blowing objects across the floor
