You've probably been asking yourself - what is field trip math? It is a chance for you to take advantage of all of the natural possibilities that exist to connect mathematics to your field trip, without having to worry about some other topic.
If the lesson is after the field trip, draw on shared experiences on the trip. If the lesson is before the trip, think about the activity and any mathematical opportunities that may arise. You can count anything. You can have the kids help you to prepare. For example, "If we want to bring two graham crackers for each kid, how many will we need?" Guide them to figure it out themselves. Think about reasons that you use math, and have the kids do it. Think about problems they may be interested in solving. Something simple, such as, "Which one of these buckets do you think will hold more sand?" can be deeply meaningful for children. How could they figure it out before the field trip without sand? The method could be repeated again during the field trip with sand . . . Just getting your mind jogging, happy field trip!
