-Read Aloud – Read Stuck in the Mud and Soil. Talk about the different kinds of soil. Today we are going to learn about sand.
9:50 Literacy Activity Seel (a twist on) Spill and Splash
Sand starts with “s”. Practice writing “s”. Use sidewalk chalk and spray your “s” with a squirt bottle. Watch the colors smear and smudge. For those that can already do “s” teach them how to draw stars. For those having trouble, use a string and make an “s” that they can trace over with the chalk.
10:05 Math – Dig in the sand and count objects you find. Find at least 3 pennies. Group what you find into groups of 3.
10:20 Break/Snack – Worms and fish
10:40 Science/Social Studies –
Navajo Sand art. Talk about the Navajo people and show pictures of their sand art. (Google images: Navajo sand art and Wikipedia). Make our own sand art project using crayons and sandpaper. Make colored sand jars.
11:05 Choosing Time
1. Sand castles are where princess live. Play princess dress up.
2. Paint a picture frame for your Navajo sand art picture.
3. Dig in the sand.
11:25 Clean up. Gather to sing and read until picked up
