Gathering: color clocks for number review, when done play with math manipulatives

Book: Tues- Little Cloud by Eric Carle
Thurs- A House for Hermit Crab by Eric Carle
Literacy:
Tuesday: Queen Quilla from SEEL - use the basic idea, but have kids tape pictures and the letter q on an actual quilt. (Bonus: I have a Hungry Caterpillar quilt!)
Thursday: repeat activity, but have kids make their own paper quilts to take home.
Math: Ordering Numbers
Tuesday: Give kids manipulatives and have them make rows of one, then two, then three, etc. Make sure kids can count each row. Talk about differences between the rows. (Note: Only two kids were able to do this initially, and one more with guidance. Next time I would present them with pre-made rows to order, then have them make their own. The other kids just counted blocks, which is also a good activity.)
Thursday: Get out picture cards, and have the kids put them in order of least to greatest amount of objects on the cards. Begin with simple comparisons (e.g. 1 vs. 4), then provide more complicated comparisons as they are able to do it. (I have picture cards, but dot cards or something easy and homemade would work also!)
Break/Snack: Tues - Read Pancakes, Pancakes by Eric Carle, then make pancakes, talking the whole time about what Jack did in the story. Then eat! (Kids LOVED this! I had the dry ingredients all mixed, and just showed them wheat kernels to make it fast. Plus, Jack didn't use baking soda, so it was just hidden in the flour.)
Thurs - Read From Head to Toe by Eric Carle, have kids do the exercises. Then eat fruit slices (link to healthy week a few weeks ago)
Author Study:
Talk about how Eric Carle creates his art. Ask kids if they notice what is the same about all of the pictures in the books, and guess how he does it.

Watch this video, and then let kids paint white paper in all different colors in preparation to make collage pictures on Thursday. (We don't have the special tissue paper he uses, so will use tag board - sturdier for preschool!)
Note: Eric Carle has a great website - www.eric-carle.com, where he answers questions about lots of things, one of them being how he creates his illustrations. He paints tissue papers in various colors with various techniques to create texture, then files them according to color. When he goes to illustrate a book, he gets paper from his file, cuts them into shapes, and creates his pictures. Ours may not turn out like his, but we'll learn so much from the process!
Choosing Time:
1. art/science - Use glue/shaving cream mixture to paint pictures of cloud formations they notice during recess, using Little Cloud as a reference.
2.math/science/sensory - (A House for Hermit Crab extension) - find rocks and sea shells in sand. Line them up from smallest to largest. Also - count them, decide which is the best "house" for our hermit crab, sort, etc.
3. science/visual discrimination (Mixed Up Chameleon extension) - I traced chameleons onto page protectors. When you place them on top of things, the chameleon "turns colors" to blend into the surroundings. Read book as transition before choosing time, then let kids take turn hiding chameleons from friends during choosing time.

Note: Eric Carle has written tons of books! Reading 5 is tough to fit in, but we only have 2 days . . . I specifically did not read The Very Hungry Caterpillar or The Grouchy Ladybug because we will be studying butterflies and ladybugs this spring, and the books would naturally fit there and be a great reminder of our author study.
