Noah really wanted to talk about camping in preschool, and it hit me that camping would be the perfect fun context for the 5 senses. This first week covers touch, sight, and hearing. I post my lesson plans to share ideas with others and to keep them for myself for later. I figure it's usually a simple copy and paste, anyway. So, here's the first week:

-Read Aloud – Me and My Senses, by Joan Sweeney
9:50 Literacy Activity – Play the name game, Names with slinkies (stretching out each phoneme), hand out letter for names one by one, decorate your name
10:05 Math – Read Chicka Chicka 123, Put numbers going up a large tree on the wall as a class, give each child their own tree to put numbers on (stickers)
10:20 Break/Snack – Goldfish crackers – have each child count out 10 to begin
10:40 Science/Social Studies –
See/Feel Camping – Conduct Activity in/right outside tent
Read We’re Going on a Nature Hunt, by Steve Metzger
Give each child a magnifying glass (talk about what it is for) and a plastic bag, have them go on a nature hunt collecting small items (see)
Gather back together to share collections. Talk about who has things that are rough, smooth, soft, poky, bumpy, etc.
Get out the table magnifier, and talk about how magnifying helps scientists see more. (If not much time, magnifier can be put out as a choice for choosing time.)
11:05 Choosing Time
1. Names in shaving cream. Have cornmeal available to mix in, talk about how it feels different with each item.
2. Counting/water table – The lake! (Water table) Put in plastic fish with numbers 1 to 10 on them. Add measuring tools second day.
3. Painting with nature – rocks, sticks, leaves, etc. as paintbrushes
4. Dramatic play/literacy – Put clipboards in tent with lanterns. Tent also has sleeping bags, empty bottle of bug spray, canteen, backpacks, map, binoculars, fake fire in front. Tell kids that campers and scientists like to record what they see. Tell kids they can use the paper on the clipboards to “write” (draw, scribble, dictate to teacher) some things they notice.

-Read Aloud – The Sleepy Little Alphabet, by Judy Sierra
9:50 Literacy Activity – Names with slinkies, stamp and write name, let kids stamp names as many times as they want after they have attempted to write it
10:05 Math – Sing 10 Funny Creatures (from Growing with Mathematics). Talk about the creatures you could find when camping. Get out stuffed animals, line them up, and number them 1 to 10. Sing 10 Funny Creatures again.
10:20 Break/Snack – goldfish crackers (count to 10)
10:40 Science/Social Studies –
*Play the whistle game – Talk about connection between whistles and camping. One child takes the whistle and hides in the back yard. We all follow the sound of the whistle to find him/her.
*Make shakers – Talk about how another fun thing to do when you are camping is sing songs. Make/decorate shakers. Let kids use when singing.
Sing the Sound Song:
Sound Song (to the tune of "Did You Ever See A Lassie?")

Did you ever hear the wind blow?
Swish, swish, swish, swish, swish.
Sing more verses according to child suggestion as to what they might hear camping.
*Sing other camp songs according to time. Sing more while waiting for parent pickup.
