Just realized I never pressed publish . . . oops! It's never too late to reinforce concepts. :)
Gathering: Pattern blocks
Song: This is Halloween (below)
Book: Little Goblins Ten
Literacy: Letter H - Halloween Hop - When kids come in a large letter H will be taped on the carpet. During literacy time have the kids make H's on the whiteboard, then invite them to the Halloween Hop! Everybody lines up on the H and sings:
Hip, hip, hop,
hip, hip, hop,
We hop on an H at the Halloween Hop!
Do additional verses, doing things that start with H as you hop on the H at the Halloween Hop.
Wear a hat
hop like a hare
walk like a hippo
clap our hands
are so hot (fan yourself)
. . . ask kids for more suggestions from kids
Math: Shape shadows - Characteristics of a rectangle, triangle
Put shapes on overhead projector. Put several different types of triangles, and ask kids what they are. Why are they all triangles when they're different? Count "points" and recreate shapes with toothpicks to count sides.
Break/Snack:
Science/Social Studies: Practice Shadow Play
One little skeleton hopping up and down,
hopping up and down,
hopping up and down,
one little skeleton hopping up and down,
For this is Halloween
Two little witches flying through the air
Three little pumpkins rolling down the street
Four little spiders hanging from a web
Five little black bats flying through the air
Six little owls sitting in a tree
Seven little black cats prowling in the night
Seven little children going trick or treat
(We will change the song to "one" for everything but children, because it's a shadow play, and the kids can't be holding a million things.)
Choosing Time:
- Shadow shapes with overhead projector (Science and math) - shapes and toothpicks
- Painting with blocks - kids explore 2D faces of 3D blocks by dipping them in paint and seeing what kinds of impressions can be made on a paper
- Sticky easel - Pattern blocks, paper clips. Kids explore shape and architecture, use creativity and imagination.
