-ig, farm, ordering numbers

9:30 – Gathering – Have the kids choose some "hair" for their pig wigs (see literacy time). I had the hats already made up and long strips of paper that has been curled around a pencil or crinkled accordion style in various colors. After each kid had chosen some hair, I stapled it to their pig wig.

9:40 – Welcome Time

Literacy activity: SEEL Pig Wig Jig. I had the kids make pig wigs earlier, then we put them on, made a circle with one pig in the middle (who was to dance a jig) and sang this song to the tune of Rig-a-Jig Jig.

10:05 – Math: ordering numbers: I gave each kid a pig picture with a number on it and they were to put their pigs in a line, in order from smallest to biggest. I then mixed them up and gave the numbers 10-16 instead of 1-7. I was surprised that this was actually quite difficult for most of the kids. Bonus (super hard round): numbers that skipped, i.e. giving them 1, 4, 5, 9, 12, 14, 16 and asking them to put those in order from smallest to biggest. That was too hard for most of the kids and I had to walk them through it. Maybe I'll just keep it simple next time.

10:40 – Science/Social Studies – Talked about where food comes from. Watched a youtube video about how peanut butter is made. The kids put together a food groups puzzle and we picked out a food from each piece to talk about where it comes from. The kids were interested: Milk comes from cows but do YOU have a cow? How do you get milk? Does the store have cows? How do they get milk?? When some of the kids didn't know where bread came from, one kid suggested the book "The Little Red Hen" could help answer their question. So though it wasn't in the plan, we read it, and it fit perfectly with our day, so I'm glad we did.

11:05 – Choosing time --
