I always post my lesson plans so that 1) Everyone can follow-up with their child if wanted, 2) I will have them saved for future reference, and 3) Everyone has some examples of things to do. Plus, since I have to have the plan to teach anyway, why not just copy and paste?
As for this week, we had a lot of fun, but the runaway hit was the mine. I leaned 2 chairs against my couch and draped a blanket over it to make a cave, then put rocks inside. I let 2 kids in at once, and they each had a hard hat, an orange vest, and a flashlight. There was also a rock classification guide and some magnifying glasses inside the cave. I told them they were miners, and they needed to go explore and find rocks. I also put some balled up aluminum foil in the mine the second day, because we had talked about how metal comes from rocks earlier. The kids loved it, and really didn't want to do anything else. Rock crystals (Igneous Rocks)
-Look at rocks with crystals, diamonds
-Make our own crystals w/sugar, frozen immediately and over time w/pipe cleaner (talk about stove being volcano)
Metal from rocks
-look at rocks with metal
- talk about what we use metal for (it’s strong and malleable, so good for a lot)
-give each child a piece of foil, ask them to make something
Transition: Sit on couch, touch your head, clap, (pattern) . . . receive choices

Look at crystals from last time, talk about what’s happening
Rock experiments
-break them (cleavage test)
-scratch them on each other/cement (hardness test)
- streak test (see what colors they make when streak is made)
-drop them in vinegar (use a piece of chalk as a control, this test is for calcium and similar minerals presence)
